Plastic Waste Partnership activities on transboundary movements of plastic waste

At its fourteenth meeting (2019), the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Basel Convention adopted decision BC-14/12 on amendments to Annexes II, VIII and IX (“Plastic Waste Amendments”) to enhance the control of transboundary movements of plastic waste and clarify the scope of the Convention as it applies to such waste.

The COP also established the PWP to promote the environmental sound management of plastic waste and in the long-term eliminate the discharge of plastic waste and microplastics into the environment. The PWP working group has established a project group on transboundary movements of plastic waste to undertake four activities, including the collection of information on actions taken by countries to implement the amendments to the Convention on plastic waste, on their interpretation of these amendments and on the challenges experienced in preparing for implementation.
